I'm hoping that some parents (with dependent children) who have survived the Big D can provide me with some input. I'd love to know what you think about this documentary:

How to Divorce & Not Wreck the Kids (44 min long)

One thing that stands out is the huge variation in costs of the different options presented:
  • $20,000 for the collaborative divorce
  • $2,500 for mediation with a psychologist
  • less for the DIY approach

Another option that I know of is formal mediation, but with both parents having their own lawyer.

Can anyone comment on the advantages and disadvantages of the various options available for couples who want to avoid an expensive, adversarial approach and keep their focus on meeting the children's needs?

Thanks in advance for help with this. I need to figure out what option to present to H when the time comes to get more serious making making D happen.
