As some of you may remember, autoimmune thyroid disease runs rampant in my family - myself, all three of my siblings, 2 teenage nieces, and my mom.
So.....D17 calls me yesterday ( she moving back home from Portland in a week and a half - that's another story).
She calls to say she doesn't feel right. Shaky, hypoglycemic, warm, hungry all the time, heart pounding. I have her check her resting pulse - 84. (That's too high). And today she noticed her hair is falling out.
I won't know for sure until I see her next week, but it sounds like overactive thyroid - just like me. :>(
So sorry!!! At least she has an awesome Mom who knows what to do.
I sooo hate autoimmune diseases... I'm sure due to being personally affected but there's just something WRONG about having your body's defense mechanism attack you.
I hope she's OK.

I was wondering how D17 was faring in Portland, one of my favorite cities. I have several very good friends there, and would consider moving there is the right job turned up.
I agree w/ Nik. Your D is in your very capable hands, and while it will be a hassle, she couldn't have a better, more knowledgeable advocate in YOU!

Well, early on there are definitely some things we can try to do to turn it around. Chief among these would be a gluten-free diet, which can sometimes reverse it.
Unfortunately, this is my least-compliant child. My H (who has a "tough it out" mentality about every illness) has encouraged her in this. It will be tough enough to get her to have the right tests done when she gets home; actually getting her to take supplements or go gluten-free will be tough. My best bet is to work on h, and then have HIM make the recommendations to her.
Thanks for asking, Slowly. She came home from Portland and looked fine - her blood tests looked pretty normal. It may have just been anxiety - or some kind of short-lived thyroid flare, but luckily she seems fine for now. Phew!
