Went to Dr apt. discussed induction, I got all excited and then we had some blood work- She says my iron is too low, well it has been low but she said "severely" yeh!! well she wants to call in a hemotologist(sp) before she induces, she said I may need am iron transfusion( ?)
Does anyone know what that is ? does that make sense? She really didn't answer my questions and I was so disappointed that I would not be having the baby tonigh tor tomm. She said I would go in possibly Wed for the transfusion then we would go from there- that it is too dangerous to do with my iron so low
HELP- Nurses out here or Dr's
Thanks lisa

Do we have any idea WHY your iron is so low? And is it just your iron that's low, or are you anemic (low red blood cell count)? Seems more likely that you are anemic, because I wouldn't think low iron stores without anemia would be a contraindication to inducing you.
Have you been taking your prenatal vitamins? Eating okay? If the answer to both is yes, then they need to figure out what else is going on to make you anemic. Have you ever had anemia before? Is there any family history of any funny anemias (like pernicious anemia, which requires B12 shots)?. Any family history of celiac disease or other intestinal diseases? Are you a vegetarian or vegan?
Yes I am anemic. I have always been slightly. I do take my vitamins plus I have been on iron pills called Nu-Iron- I have not been able to keep food down during this pregnancy , theiron pills included. I will be seeing the hemotologist so can he help? they did say something about a RBC transfusion?
Thanks,Lisa

The hematologist should help. Make sure to tell him that anemia has always been an issue, not just during this pregnancy. There are some kinds of inherited anemias that don't respond to vitamins and iron. Also, much rarer, is B12 deficiency due to an inability to absorb B12 - not too likely, but ask the hematologist about this too.
They will probably give you a RBC transfusion. Just giving you iron would give you the basics you need to MAKE more blood cells, but your body can't make them that fast - takes a few weeks.
I am on Phenergan,I have been since February. It helps a little, I have been in the hospital for dehydration on numerous occasions b/c I can't keep anything down. What is a RBC transfusion? Should I be scared?
Thanks so much. :Lisa

It's a blood transfusion. RBC's are red blood cells and when your RBC count gets low you are diagnosed with anemia. Anemia of preganancy is pretty normal with your body's increased water volume. The fact that your nutrition is poor makes it more of an issue. Blood transfusions nowadays are quite safe. The blood banks test the blood for strains of virus' not even found in humans yet. I have given many blood tranfusions over the years and not seen or heard of anyone contracting a disease. The biggest risk is a transfusion reaction which is rare, especially if you have never had a transfusion before.
It is risky due to the possibilty of clotting problems after delivery. Get the blood transfusion and ferritin (iron) transfusions with no worries. Gotta take care of LL now!

It's a little late to do much good, but for what it's worth - if you can't keep down the prenatal vitamins, at least try some children's chewables. I've had some patients who could keep those down even when nauseated.
It's a vicious cycle, because the vomiting causes vitamin deficiencies, and there are studies suggesting that vitamin deficiencies (esp. B6) cause the vomiting.
Couldn't sleep last night. Cried my eyes out until about 4am. sometimes I miss my H so bad. I wish so much he was here with me. I know some of you are going to get upset at me for being needy or whatever- I haven't called himor anything I am just putting it out here- I am sure I will get slammed. My heart just ached and all I could see was all the good things and times we shared. It just playing over and over in my head. I am really scared. I know I will make it either way but it hurts like hell and I look at myself sometimes and think of what I could have done differently then my kids would have their dad- even though I know in my head this is his choice, my heart is heavy. I want to reach out so bad. But I know I can't. He is with someone now who will give him what I couldn't -
love,'Lisa

No one is going to slam you for loving your H. We've all been there/are still there. I can't imagine what it would be like to go through this a second time, and while pregnant.
I'm still not 100% convinced of ow - his brother may not know. But even if it's true, who knows what she's giving him? Hon, I am there myself, but I just put it out of my head (as much as possible). Maybe she's giving him undivided attention, telling him he's wonderful all the time, a life w/o responsiblities--yeah, sounds pretty good! That's not the reality of married life all the time.
I'm sorry for the letdown with your little one.
