I just wanted to echo NYS's post. Maybe pure DBing is not for you, because you have to show that you need him now and want to commit to him...
No advice on how to do that really - but would be wonderful if you could meet him with the refugee family next time with a smile on your face and your chin in the air and manage to get in the converstaion that you are not the type of person who gives up on what is important to them, while talking about something else...? But how to engineer this...?
