Hi Ellie

Happy New Year!

I just noticed this new thread of yours, couldn't find one for you a couple of days ago... I weighed myself on Monday on my return, after Christmas feasting and three further fabulous meals out... to find I was 67.5 kilos, so not too bad.

I picked up a cheap copy of "The seven Secrets of Slim People" and it is full of stuff I really know to be true but don't follow. Or, haven't followed so far!

They say somewhere that the people who know most about nutrition are often the worst in terms of being overweight and unhealthy. For instance, are doctors healthier than the population at large, hmmmm???

I have read up about nutrition for years, have a library full of books on the subject from many points of view, yet, to my shame, I have allowed myself to put on weight (not too much though), sit in front of the computer for hours every day, and don't do any sport at the moment. The latter is a problem of time and having people to do things with (not).

So anyway, this book is helping me think about my relation to food, it doesn't advocate any particular kind of diet. You can check it out at

amazon.com

LivnLearn -

I find myself the opposite. The more I learn about nutrition, the better I apply it. Of course, some of it is conflicting - but I do the best I can! I don't have libraries of books, but read many fitness magazines (one of the best is Mens Health, IMHO), as well as Shape, Self, and others - and I find myself applying the nutrition information pretty well.

Most doctors I have had seem pretty healthy - not sure as far as what they eat, I have never seen their cupboards!

Hi there Ellie and everyone

I weighed in at 68 kilos today. I started my period yesterday as well, it was petty late, I guess the begininnings of menopause are here, so not the best time of the month to get on the scales!

I have taken to heart much of what was written in the above mentioned book - The Seven Serets of Slim People - and know that I will be OK, given some time. It says you may even put on weight at first, before you lose any. It allows you to "make friends" with your body again, instead of being annoyed with it or hating it! Probably a healthier attitude than my perfectionist one, the side effect of which is an all or nothing attitude.

So, I'm hanging in there!

What about you?

Okay, I'm not getting on the scale today, because my period is about to start and I know I am bloated. BUT - I must say that I definitely can already see a difference from doing these exercise tapes, some firming up already visible.
I've done a pretty good job with my eating this week too. Some recent changes I've made that seem to be working for me:

- Routine. For me, a rut is a comfortable place - so if I eat the same things for breakfast and lunch every day, I don't have to think or make choices. So - every day I have a slice of sprouted whole wheat toast with peanut butter and a banana for breakfast, and a Healthy Choice frozen dinner and a grapefruit for lunch. Dinners vary, but I try to make sure I have some protein, like a chicken breast, and fill half my plate with salad or veggies.

- Grapefruit - okay, so this researcher at Scripps reported some preliminary research last year. They had half the people in their study eat 1/2 grapefruit with each meal, the other half didn't. The grapefruit eaters lost something like 3 1/2 lbs. over 12 weeks (doesn't sound like much, but actually quite significant, especially since they weren't dieting in other ways). Who knows, but I like grapefruit, and the ruby reds in my grocery store are really good right now.

- Vitamins - okay, I've been taking my vitamins all along, but just wanted to remind all of you to do the same. I can definitely say i feel so much better when I take them consistently.

Last week seemed like everyday went up, weird, I was getting very discouraged, but I think it was the week it was. Then this morning I had lost 3 pounds, that was just as weird.

I had to get some more vitamins, and I bought the multivitamin diet smart with egcg. Anyone try that before, good or bad?

Well the green tea extract is supposed to be good for you. I like green tea and used to drink it daily. Can't say it did anything for me as far as diet, but then, I have thyroid issues going on too. Seems to be safe, at least.

I just came to your post b/c someone recommended it to hopefloats7 from infidelity.
I have no good reason to be in peicing, but this is the second time I have found myself here and suddenly found a connection to someone.
Its your Thyroid. I am currently printing your thread. I want to catch up. But I have got a thyroid thing to. I think that had something to do w/downfall b/c of my issues with it. Some that I did not even realize b4 they got "fixed" some based upon the "fix"

Shocked -
Well, I've been through it on the thyroid. Had overactive thyroid, tried antithyroid drugs, number were good but I never felt right. I think H started to think it was "all in my head"- probably the start of the downfall of our R too.

Eventually I had radioactive iodine ablation, then became profoundly low thyroid very quickly. Took almost 6 months to get replacement doses back to where I felt normal. Meanwhile endocrinologist was telling me and my H that I should be feeling better already (when I was only on 60% of the dose I finally needed) so of course my H REALLY thought it was in my head then. (I'd love to see HIM function at 60% of normal metabolism!). Top if off with the marriage counselor suggesting to my H that maybe I was getting some secondary gain out of being sick - well, gee, is it any wonder my H started an affair then???

Once my thyroid replacement levels reached normal, I was fine. Lost weight, trained to climb Mt. Whitney, could think straight again. I think the thing I'll never quite be able to forgive my H for, is the way he didn't believe me.

Since then, I was doing great until my D developed her ED and simultaneously my thyroid levels slipped a bit. I put the weight back on while refeeding her (I ate a lot of lunches out with her, and couldn't diet or exercise in front of her for fear of triggering her).

Trying to lose it now, I'm running up against what a lot of thyroid patients find - that even with adequate levels of thyroid replacement, the weight doesn't come off easily. I'm trying to focus now on strategies to reduce insulin resistance, since this runs in my family and low thyroid can also produce it. So - lots of protein, watch my carbs, I take chromium and magnesium along with my multivits.

Hi Ellie -

I am bloated too, so the scale isn't going to be accurate (so I don't always get on it as often during "that time")

I am doing great at my approx. 1800 calories a day, I've been back at that for nearly a week now.

I also eat nearly the same for most meals. I start out with oatmeal/skim milk in the morning, but with a little something also before I walk (since that is earlier than breakfast). Mid-morning, a piece of fruit and something dairy (not ice cream!). Lunch, a large fruit smoothie - lots and lots of fruit in my blender. yummm! Sometimes fruit and dairy again at 3ish, though sometimes two pieces of whole wheat toast. Dinner varies - tonight we are having chicken alfredo, I'll have a little, plus plenty of veggies.
That is one of the fattier dishes I make, I do a lot of healthy meat ones too (but i don't eat tons of meat - lots more veggies and salad, etc.)

I'm glad you are doing well, Ellie!

That happens sometimes - I've had a 2 - 4 pound loss on the scale in one day. Maybe the body is holding a lot of water for a while, I don't know why. But I don't get discouraged when I don't lose weight on any given basis - I feel great.

As far as vitamins - I get Flintstones! And I have fish oil pills also, I just need to remember to take them. I actually get lots of vitamins and minerals from the food I eat - so the Flintstones is pretty good to supplement!
