How to make friends, a crash course:

1. Smile - widely, proudly.
2. Give someone you somewhat know an unexpected compliment "Wow, those are some really great shoes!" Make sure it's a genuine compliment.
3. Repeat step 2 for at least 3 days. This person will feel more comfortable around you, and you will soon have a "water cooler" relationship - where you engage in some small talk.
4. Ask about new friend's hobbies and interests. If you share one (going to movies, playing poker, reading) find a way to do it together (invite them to a movie with you, invite them over for a low stakes game - bring your own chocolate coins - start a book club).
5. If they say no, ask again in a week.

I have found that it is hard to find social networks, but i guess that will make it a challenge for me and if nothing else keep me busy. Wish i had family close by though. Chin up Meg, will be thinking of you.

Hi All, Tomorrow i will have been married for 23 years. Im not going to celebrate as there is nothing to celebrate for. My B/D was thursday 18th March as well. It was good and we are doing what we should of done years ago, which is appreciate each other. I cant believe it had to come to this for us to do that? Why is it we get so caught up in work and hobbies and yet let our marraiges go? I am holding on and i have hope, there is always hope.

Hi DIP and BlwnAwy,

I'm in Melbourne and I have the trouble making friends issue, too! DIP, if you've come to Perth from elsewhere, I'm not sure whether you know this, but my experience is it can be harder to make connections in Perth. It's like the isolation makes Perthians more cliquey or something--so I suppose I wanted to say that it's not entirely you--you're in a beautiful city but with slightly standoffish people. (and I really hope I don't get any hate mail from Perthians--because I really do like the place and the people, it's just the reputation it has and my experience concurs with that reputation). Doesn't mean you can't do it, though. Sending warm thoughts your way.
