Hiya CHL,
Just wanted to take a couple minutes here on my lunch break to welcome you to the neighorhood. Hope you decide to stick around for a bit...

Like Sage, I tend to jump right into things , but I do get the impression that there is something simmering right under the surface and I agree, it would be best to put that on a new thread if you choose to.

'til later,
KAW

Yah...I was sort of kidding but figured I'd throw it out there anyway...you know, the engineer in me loves "quatifiable and measurable" goals!

I fully understand. I wish everyone did!

Thanks for the welcome. Not sure if I'll start my own thread or not. Off and on, I've read threads on the BB. Up until this past weekend though, I hadn't posted anything. I guess I'll just have to see if it continues.

CoolHandLuke,

Ok...I've seen the movie. And the only thing I remember from it was the quote: "Failure to communicate." And that's because it was in a Guns and Roses song, called Civil War.

All right...I'm curious about it. As soon as we get the tv/vcr unpacked, I'll go rent the movie!

Hugs!

It's been many years since I've seen the movie also.

Fair enough.

However, it must have meant something special to you. I say this because I quote lines from Star Wars movies and from Princess Bride...course, I've seen them all at least 20 times each...

Hugs!

I love Star Wars (the three initial ones) and Princess Bride. What about Ladyhawk, PnB? Should have gotten the DVDs for your homewarming party!

BTW, CHL I wonder whether someone had warned you about how addictive the BB is. I think they should post a warning somewhere. Will have to ask JJ.

But do not worry too much. It does not seem to be immediately lethal

BTW, I found this on the net and could not resist. It must appeal to your engineering self

Quote:

Could you eat fifty eggs? Could anyone? Our backyard biologists Jonathan Hare and Robert Llewellyn are determined to find out.

The first step, find out the amount of space the eggs would take up, then see if a person's stomach can hold that much.

So let's use some simple calculations. If the radius of an egg is about 2.5cm and the volume of an ellipse is: 4 pi r3/3

volume of ellipse = 4 x pi x (0.025)3 = 3.5 x 10 -5
volume of 50 eggs = 0.03 m2

(where m is metres) Fifty eggs will be approximately 0.003 metres cubed or 3 litres when chewed.

Can the human stomach hold this many eggs?

And what happens to the eggs as they pass through the digestive system?

When we smell food, our mouth responds by producing saliva, and as we eat, the saliva lubricates our food and begins the process of digestion.

The average amount of saliva we can produce in one go is 300ml, and once this saliva has been used up, food becomes dry and difficult to chew and swallow. Once Paul Newman has eaten a number of eggs, thus using up all of his available saliva, he would have to wait (so he can produce more) or drink something to help the eggs go down. Once chewed and swallowed, food passes down the oesophagus and into the stomach.

The stomach is a J-shaped organ with very active muscles, which expand and contract depending on the amount of food present.

It's 25cm long and a trained stomach is capable of holding up to 4 litres of food. When the stomach is empty it contains about 1 litre of liquid.
So Paul Newman's 3 litres of eggs should just about fit into a very large stomach. But most people's stomachs could not hold this much.

Once full, the stomach's nerves sense that it has become stretched and its muscles begin to work so that the food and enzymes mix together.

The gastric gland secretes pepsin, an enzyme that breaks down protein, and hydrochloric acid which kills bacteria. The gastric gland also secretes mucus that protects the walls of the stomach from the acid.

Once broken down the food is a semi-fluid mass which enters the small intestine, and it is here that most of the digestion takes place. At this stage, only the protein has begun to be digested.

Only small amounts of food are released into the 6.5m long small intestine at a time. This means that most of the eggs will remain in the stomach for longer than 3 1/2 hours.

Here enzymes from the pancreas break down the sugars, fats and the proteins that were not tackled in the stomach.

Towards the end of the small intestine, the tube is lined with millions of cillia, tiny blood rich projections that give the small intestine a huge surface area, ready to absorb the broken down eggs.

Now the eggs move into the large intestine. All of the broken down components of the eggs have passed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream. What remains are the insoluble parts, like roughage and water. The large intestine itself doens't contribute to digestion, but bacteria that live there create vitamin K and some of the B vitamins. The eggs will spend up the 24 hours in the large intestine where most of the water is absorbed. The last of the eggs pass out of the anus about 36 hours after being eaten.

Not only will Paul Newman be bunged up for 36 hours after eating his eggs, the amount of hydrogen sulphide gas (stink gas) he would produce would be awful. So after all of this, what is the likelihood of Paul Newman eating 50 eggs? Not great. He would run out of saliva, and chances are his stomach would not be trained to take 4 litres of food.

(Soft boiled) 32 in 78 seconds by Peter Dowdeswell in Northampton, April 1978.

Yes, never having heard of the movie in question I was trying to get some background My researching soul!

Hi CHL!

You know, you may not realize it, but just having your few posts here on this thread have given the rest of us some insights on how to help Pam out.

I've noticed a more straightforward, even blunt tone to the posts on HER thread. You have NO idea how many pleas for her to get a GOOD counsellor and get this depression under control have come up these past few days.

It is also clear to us that at present YOU are just tapped out...she really needs to find alternative sources of support and WORK through her emotions.

I LOVE the analogy that someone (opt? zoo?) used on her thread today when she mentioned that you didn't seem to notice that her emotional meltdowns were fewer...

The poster said something to the effect of...."The guy is buried under a ton of dirt...and you expect him to notice that you've taken a shovelfull off the top????"

We're here for you too, CHL, REGARDLESS of how things turn out for Pam and you.

It's SO helpful to hear about your end of things. I wish you could feel freer to really share.

I DO still think that your own thread would be ideal.

Do you fear that Pam wouldn't be able to resist checking it? There must be some kind of assurance/ deal you can cook up???
