That's exactly what I'm thinking. The employees there were basically doing my job for me, incredibly nice people. And also my friend from the church that wanted her to hire me is the head of their Board and very influential, so she also probably didn't want to make her upset by firing me either. So this way she is totally blameless.

I felt really awful yesterday about it, but since I have zero Excel and Mac experience, it really was just not a great job fit. H was out of the office yesterday, back today and emailed me a dozen times again today about the job and $$ and the kids. And then called about something. He was actually very understanding about the whole thing which I thanked him for. Yeah, I suck at DBing I know!!!

I guess H also asked around his office and they seemed to think I might need to learn Excel for any office jobs. Is that something everyone knows how to do now? H was suggesting I take a class (but my idea of hell is Excel spreadsheets on a Mac) so I'm hoping that's not true!!! Karen

It would be an asset that is quickly becoming necessary. You could get a book and practice at home so that at least you are familiar.

When I hired my assistant, several years ago, I asked her if she was good at PowerPoint. Really wanting the job, she enthusiastically replied "Oh, yes -- VERY good!"

She then went out and bought "PowerPoint for Dummies," and boned up on it during the week before she started the job with me.

I bet there is an "Excel for Dummies" book, too, and that whole series is very good -- my family owns several (eBaying for Dummies, etc.). I do think you're going to be expected to be proficient at Word and Excel for just about any office job these days.

Excel is pretty much the same no matter which system you run it on.

And the Mac OS is really not that hard to pick up at all -- just think of it as a future version of Windows (everybody knows Microsoft cribs from Apple.) Most people have the same problem just switching between different releases of Windows, such as going from XP to Vista.

Karen I would go get that book. I bought a book just I would be familiar with all of those programs. You could probably get one from amazon pretty cheap.

I just want to let you know I was not trying to belittle your discomfort and unfamiliarity with Macs and Excel. I do understand that you were, instead, just not expecting that job to have to deal so much with computer spreadsheets in general, let alone a different operating system and a specific program.

Like I said, I know you'll have the next position lined up in no time. Your kindness and sweetness alone will again land you the next one.

BTW, do you use a lot of emoticons on your resume too? (Just kiddin' ya'. )

Karen I'm not sure about all computers, but the version of Windows that I have on my computer here at work and at home has Excel on it and it also has a tutorial part in the help menu.

I dogpiled "learining Exel online" and here are a couple of things that my help you.

http://www.hp.com/ this one is a free online course for Excel 2003.

They probably have the same for word as well.

Thanks, Corey!! I'm going to check out the tutorial and those links! I have excel on my computer, but just never use it!!! Embarrassing to admit, but should make it easier to practice with. Right now, I'm thinking I'll get the book and check out the tutorials. If I still don't feel comfortable with it, then I'm thinking I'll check into a class around here. They have a local community college that might have it near here and also a vocational-tech school and that will prob. definitely have it! I feel better today, just having finally slept well last night, and I also have plans to work on my tech. skills so I can survive in the workplace.

NC, it's fine. It's funny b/c some Mac people are so gung-ho MAC, and yeah, I'm pretty gung-ho PC. You could never make me feel bad, and esp. about my computer skills. The funny thing is my brother you know is a computer engineer for one of the big computer companies! He's a genius about computers and all that. And yeah, I don't think I inherited that gene!!! But I can kick his butt by the way with anything to do English/writing wise!!!

And no, I do not use smileys on my resume, but hmmm, that sounds like that might be a good idea!!! (kidding, kidding)

H came over tonight (took D8 out to dinner) but didn't have the kids sleep over since S14 is sick and D8 has a girl scout trip tomorrow at 8:30 (and he lives about 45 minutes away). D8 asked him to come see her Sunday at church, she'll be singing with the other Terrific Tuesday kids, about 2 dozen of them, and she and the other girls her age will be ringing the handbells too. They sound so sweet and cute they are K-5th grade. H told her he didn't want to, and he's coming to pick them up right after church!!! Karen

I can't believe he told her that! What an A$$tard. I'm so sorry. Its the worse when the hurt the kids. You go and see her and just know that your DAFT H CHOSE not to be there.
