I agree, there are glimmers here. I think that maintaining the picture of couple-hood for family and friends is positive, altho frustrating for you, I'm sure. The fact that he is being kind is huge--and it sounds like genuine kindness, not just a facade. And it sounds as if he does enjoy your company, and friendship is a necessary first step.
