Theo, I've been at work for days on end, and just now dug up your thread to catch up. I am sooooo sorry about your situation, but you are doing well. The 40th bday thing is a tough one.
H's came less than 5 months after his A. MANY months earlier (right before the bomb) I had started a project for his bday, emailed/contacted every friend I could find from his life to send memories/photos of him, and made him a This Is Your Life kind of scrapbook. Even through the bomb, his firing, the rest of the A, the emails/photos would come in, and I would file them away for his scrapbook, thinking "I am going to have to ship this thing across the country when he moves to be near OW" - but still plugged along. He said it was one of the best presents he ever received.
Fast forward one year to my 40th birthday and it was the largest disappointment on record. Yuck. Anyway, I digress wildly, as I am prone to do.
All that to say: a) it sucks to turn 40, IMO, as a woman. I hate it. b) you did the right thing, and your wife is wrong, but I still feel for her in a small way about the 40 thing. c) you feel for her too, and it is good your heart was a bit sad and connected to her feelings - and yet it didn't deter how you acted.

On Friday I took the kids to the Botancial Gardens and hung out with a friend of mine.
Saturday I took the kids to my a friend of my wife's house and I ended up taking my kids and hers to the park. It was on the river and we watched a beautiful sunset. Then, took the kids and met my wife at a restaurant and we all had dinner together.
Sunday was church. I took the kids to a museum afterwards. Then my wife joined us at the museum.
